We have spent so much time exploring every little corner of Puerto Vallarta. After years of walking these cobblestone streets, we have learned that the real magic isn't always on the main beach.
If you are a couple looking for a romantic getaway, you are going to LOVE the secrets we’ve found. Most people stay right on the Malecón, but the true soul of the city is tucked away in the side streets of the Romantic Zone.
Old Town and the Zona Romantica are actually the same wonderful place. It is the heart of the city where the history and the fun come together.
When we first started coming here, we stayed in big hotels. But we quickly realized that staying in puerto vallarta rentals old town is the only way to feel like a local.
Today, we want to share the spots that aren't on every tourist map. These are the places that make us fall in love with PV over and over again!
The Secret View: El Mirador de La Cruz
Most visitors walk the flat streets by the ocean and never look up. But if you want the BEST view in the entire city, you have to head to El Mirador de La Cruz.

It is a bit of a hike, so bring some water and wear your walking shoes! But once you get to the top, the view of the red-tiled roofs and the sparkling blue bay is just AMAZING.
We love going up there right before sunset. It is so quiet compared to the beach, and it feels like the whole city belongs just to you two.
If you are a solo traveler or a couple, this is the perfect spot to just sit and breathe. It is sooo peaceful and definitely one of our favorite hidden spots.
The Island in the Middle of the City
Did you know there is an island right in the middle of town? Isla Cuale is a lush, green paradise that sits in the river between the downtown area and the Romantic Zone.

It is much cooler under the big trees there. We love wandering through the flea market on the island to find handmade treasures.
But the real secret is the tiny cafes along the riverbank. You can sit and listen to the water rushing by while you sip on a fresh juice or a coffee.
It feels like a secret jungle hiding in plain sight. We highly recommend spending an afternoon just getting lost on the island.
Eating Like a Local: The Cenadurias
If you want the real taste of Mexico, you have to skip the fancy places for at least one night. Look for the "cenadurias" tucked away on the back streets.

These are small, family-run spots that usually open only in the evenings. They serve things like pozole, sopes, and the most incredible tacos you will ever eat.
The atmosphere is always so warm and friendly. We once sat in a tiny cenaduria and ended up talking to a local family for two hours!
The food is made with so much love, and it is the best way to support the local community. You will find the most authentic ones a few blocks back from the beach in the heart of Old Town.
Before you head out to eat, you might want to check out some of the other the joy of pv apartments to see how others live in this vibrant neighborhood.
Why Amapas is Our Absolute Favorite
While we love the energy of the Romantic Zone, we have a very strong opinion about where to actually stay. For us, Amapas is the best place to rent in all of Puerto Vallarta.

Amapas is just a short walk from all the action of the Romantic Zone, but it feels a world away. It is built into the hillside, so you get these incredible ocean views and a lot more peace and quiet.
We LOVE waking up to the sound of tropical birds instead of city traffic. It is the most romantic area for couples who want both convenience and privacy.
The lush greenery in Amapas is just stunning. It feels like you are staying in a tropical forest while still being five minutes away from the best restaurants in town.
When you are looking for zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals, definitely look for spots in Amapas like the Sueño or The Nest. They are perfect for couples.
The Beauty of One-Bedroom Units
For couples or solo travelers, we always suggest looking at one-bedroom units. They are so much more intimate and cozy than a big house.
Having your own kitchen and living space makes you feel like you actually live here. You can go to the Olas Altas Farmers Market on Saturday morning, buy some fresh fruit, and enjoy it on your own balcony.
It is such a relaxed way to travel. You aren't on a hotel schedule; you are on "PV time."
If you are still deciding on your trip, reading a condo rental guide can really help you figure out what fits your style best.
Wandering the Cobblestones
Our final secret isn't a specific place, but a way of being. Just walk.
Turn down a street you haven't seen before. Look for the murals on the walls and the flowers spilling over the balconies.
Puerto Vallarta is a very safe and friendly city. The locals are always happy to point you toward their favorite taco stand or a hidden boutique.
We are so grateful that we get to call this place a second home. Every time we return, we find something new that surprises us.
We hope these little secrets help you have the most AMAZING vacation ever! This city has so much heart, and we know you are going to fall in LOVE with it just like we did.
Puerto Vallarta is waiting for you, and we can't wait for you to experience the magic of the Romantic Zone and Amapas for yourself. It is truly the best!
