Every single night in Puerto Vallarta, I find myself doing the exact same thing.
I put on my favorite walking shoes, grab my camera, and head straight for the water.
There is something about the Malecón that just pulls you in.
It is the mile-long boardwalk that hugs the ocean, and it is the absolute soul of this city.
If you are visiting for the first time, you might think it is just a sidewalk by the sea.
But it is SO MUCH more than that!!!!
For me, walking the Malecón has become a nightly tradition that I simply cannot skip.
It is how I decompress, how I see my friends, and how I feel the real energy of Mexico.
The Magic of the Golden Hour
The walk usually starts just as the sun begins to dip low.
The sky turns these crazy shades of pink, orange, and deep purple.
I love how the light hits the white buildings of Old Town.
It makes everything look like a painting.
Sometimes I start my day with a peaceful Amapas Morning which is very quiet and calm.
But by sunset, I am ready for the buzz of the crowd.
The air starts to cool down just enough to make a long walk feel AMAZING.
You can smell the salt from the waves crashing against the rocks.
And then, the streetlights flicker on, and the real show begins.
Art and Soul on the Boardwalk
As you walk, you pass these incredible bronze sculptures.
There are about 17 of them, and they are museum-quality pieces just sitting out in the open.
My favorite is the giant Seahorse.
It is the icon of Puerto Vallarta!
I see people lining up every night to take a photo with it.
The statues tell stories of the sea, of local legends, and of the imagination.
But the art isn’t just made of metal.
You will see sand artists creating massive, detailed cathedrals right on the beach.
They work for hours with just sand and water.
It is mind-blowing how they do it!
Further down, you might run into the "living statues."
These performers dress up in gold or silver paint and stand perfectly still.
I always jump a little when they suddenly move to wave at a kid!
The Best View in Town
When we go out for our nightly stroll, we always look back toward the hills.
The lights of the houses in Amapas and Old Town start to twinkle like stars.
It makes me so happy to know that my home base is right there.

Being able to walk home after a night on the Malecón is the best feeling in the world.

The Voladores de Papantla
One thing you absolutely cannot miss is the Flying Men.
They are called the Voladores de Papantla.
It is a tradition that is hundreds of years old.
Five men climb a pole that is 50 feet high.
One stays at the top playing a flute and a drum.
The other four tie ropes to their feet and literally launch themselves into the air!
They spin around the pole, getting lower and lower until they touch the ground.
I have seen it a hundred times, but I still watch it every single night.
It is breathtaking and a little bit scary!
The crowd always cheers so loud when they land safely.
It is one of those moments that makes you realize how special Mexican culture is.
Street Food Heaven
You cannot walk the Malecón without eating.
I mean, you could try, but the smells will get you eventually!
The food stalls are everywhere.
I always go for the elotes: corn on the cob slathered in cream, cheese, lime, and chili.
It is messy, but it is the BEST snack ever.
Then there are the crepes.
They make them right in front of you on these big round griddles.
I usually get Nutella and banana.
If you want something traditional, look for the "Tuba" man.
Tuba is a drink made from palm sap, topped with walnuts and diced apple.
It sounds weird, but it is incredibly refreshing!
Walking and eating is the unofficial sport of the Malecón.
The Heartbeat of the Plaza
In the middle of the walk, you hit Los Arcos.
These are the stone arches that sit in front of a big open-air theater.
Every night, there is something happening there.
Sometimes it is a local band playing rock and roll.
Other times, it is a folkloric dance troupe with big colorful skirts and sombreros.
My favorite nights are when the clowns perform.
Even if you don't speak perfect Spanish, you can understand the physical comedy.
Hundreds of people sit on the stone benches, laughing and clapping.
It is a place where families bring their kids, and grandparents sit to watch the world go by.
It is totally free and totally wonderful.
Finding Your Own Path
While the main boardwalk is great, I also like to explore the side streets.
There are so many Secret Spots in Old Town just a block away from the water.
You can find tiny art galleries or quiet bars where the locals hang out.
I love the contrast between the big energy of the oceanfront and the quiet charm of the cobblestones.
Sometimes we just wander without a plan.
That is how you find the best tacos and the hidden murals.
Puerto Vallarta is so safe and welcoming, you never feel worried about getting lost.
In fact, getting lost is usually how we find our favorite new places!
Why Nightly Walks Matter
In our busy lives back home, we rarely just "walk."
We are always rushing to a meeting or driving to a store.
But here, the walk IS the event.
It teaches you to slow down.
It reminds you to look up at the moon and listen to the waves.
I see the same faces every night: the man selling balloons, the woman with the handmade jewelry.
We wave and say "Buenas noches."
It makes you feel like you belong to a community, even if you are just here for a week.

Even if you aren't a big "club" person, it is fun to see the excitement.
The whole boardwalk is lit up like a Christmas tree.
The reflection of the neon lights on the water is sooooo beautiful.
I usually start heading back toward Amapas around 10 or 11 PM.
The walk back is quieter, but still beautiful.
Staying in the Best Spot
If you are planning your trip, seriously consider Amapas.
It is the hillside area right next to the Zona Romantica (Old Town).
We have stayed in Sueño and also at The Nest, and both were perfect.
Amapas gives you the best views of the bay, but it is only a 5-minute walk to the start of the Malecón.
You get the best of both worlds!
I love waking up and seeing the ocean, and then walking down the hill at night to join the party.
It really is the most convenient and beautiful part of town.
I highly recommend making the nightly Malecón walk your own tradition.
It costs nothing, but it gives you everything.
You will see the best performers, eat the best street food, and see the best sunsets in Mexico.
I wouldn't trade my nightly walk for anything!
It is the absolute highlight of my time here every single time.
