When we first landed in Puerto Vallarta, I was obsessed with the colors. I mean, how can you not be? Everywhere you look, there’s this explosion of blues, yellows, and deep oranges that just makes you feel like you’re actually on vacation. But after a few trips, we realized that the best part isn’t just seeing those colors on the street: it’s bringing them into our own space.
If you’re anything like us, you want your rental to feel like a home, not just a place to drop your bags. Whether you’re here for a week or staying a little longer, the vibe of your environment matters. We’ve found that incorporating local style, specifically the incredible Talavera pottery and hand-woven textiles, is the secret sauce to a perfect stay.
Why Talavera is the Heart of Vallarta
You see those gorgeous, hand-painted tiles everywhere, right? That’s Talavera. It’s got a history that goes way back, but in Puerto Vallarta, it’s become a staple of the local aesthetic. We LOVE how every single piece is a little bit different because it’s all made by hand.
I remember the first time we bought a set of Talavera coffee mugs at the market. Every morning, drinking my coffee out of this chunky, bright blue mug made the whole experience feel so much more authentic. It’s those small details that turn a standard condo into a sanctuary.
If you are looking for the absolute best area to experience this vibe, we always suggest looking at the Amapas neighborhood. It’s tucked just slightly above the hustle of Old Town, giving you incredible views and a bit more peace, while still being surrounded by that traditional Mexican charm. Amapas is hands down our favorite place to rent.

Shopping the Local Markets
If you are a solo traveller or a couple looking to spruce up your temporary home, you have to hit the markets. We spent an entire afternoon at the Emiliano Zapata market just wandering through the stalls. You can find everything from fresh chilies to the most intricate textiles you’ve ever seen.
The textiles here are AMAZING!! We’re talking hand-woven pillow covers from Chiapas and heavy, beautiful rugs that feel so good under your feet. When we stay in Puerto Vallarta condos for rent by owner, we often bring a few of our own small finds to lay out. A colorful runner on the dining table or a bright throw over the sofa completely changes the mood.
But best of all, the people at the markets are so kind. We’ve had the best conversations with vendors who are happy to tell you the story behind the patterns. It makes the items feel so much more special when you know they were made with love.
Mixing Modern with Traditional
One thing we’ve learned is that you don’t need to go overboard. You don’t want your place to look like a souvenir shop exploded! The trick is to mix modern, clean lines with these traditional pops of color.
Think about a sleek, modern kitchen: like the ones you find in the newer builds in Amapas: and then add a big, hand-painted Talavera bowl filled with fresh limes and mangoes. It’s simple, it’s fresh, and it looks SOOO good.

We’ve seen some incredible ways people use these tiles too. Some of our favorite rentals have them built right into the staircases or as a border around the bathroom mirror. It’s such a clever way to add character without cluttering the space. If you want to see more of these hidden art walk, you should definitely check out our recent neighborhood guide.
The Textile Touch
Don't forget about the fabrics! Mexican textiles are some of the most beautiful in the world. We’re particularly fond of the Otomí embroidery: those whimsical animals and flowers in bright neon colors.
Adding just one or two of these pieces can brighten up a room instantly. We usually look for:
- Hand-woven throw blankets for those rare "chilly" tropical evenings.
- Embroidered cushions for the balcony chairs.
- Woven placemats that make every meal feel like a fiesta.
Speaking of meals, the food here is an art form in itself. Using local pottery for your dinner parties is a total game-changer. There’s something about eating street tacos off a hand-painted plate that just tastes better. Trust us on this one!
Making Your Stay Personal
If you’re planning your first trip, or even your tenth, taking the time to appreciate the local craftsmanship is part of the magic. We always feel so much more connected to Puerto Vallarta when we surround ourselves with the work of local artisans.
It’s not just about the decor, though. It’s about the feeling of being home. We’ve written before about rainy day guide and how much it impacts your overall vacation. When you find a place that already has those beautiful local touches, you’re halfway there.

Final Thoughts on Local Style
We can’t recommend the Amapas and Zona Romantica areas enough for your next stay. These neighborhoods are the heart of the "real" Vallarta vibe. You get the cobblestone streets, the amazing food, and the best access to local shops.
Whether you’re buying a few tiles to take home as coasters or decking out your entire rental with textiles, embracing the local style is the best way to live like a local. It makes every day feel a bit more vibrant and a lot more meaningful. If you are still deciding where to stay, we also like browsing puerto vallarta condo rentals for more ideas in Amapas, Old Town, and Zona Romantica.
We are so grateful for the artists and makers in this city who keep these traditions alive. Their work is what makes Puerto Vallarta feel like nowhere else on earth.
