If you are a solo traveler or a couple looking to work remotely from paradise, you need more than just a bed. You need a place that actually works for your life.
Here are the 10 things I wish I knew before I started my journey here.
1. Location is Everything
You might think any place near the beach is fine, but trust me, it’s not. Puerto Vallarta is a mix of different vibes. You have the busy streets of Old Town and the quiet hills of Amapas.
I spent my first week in a spot that was way too far from the coffee shops. I spent more on Ubers than I did on lunch.
Now, I always tell people to stay close to the action but not right in the middle of it. You want to be able to walk to the beach in five minutes but still get a good night's sleep.
2. Amapas is the Best Place to Stay
If you want my honest opinion, Amapas is the absolute best neighborhood. It sits just above Old Town, so you get these incredible views of the ocean.
It is much quieter than the main streets of Zona Romantica. You don't have the loud bars right outside your window, but you can walk down the hill and be at a restaurant in minutes.
The breeze up there is better, too. When it gets hot in the afternoon, being a little higher up makes a huge difference. It feels more private and relaxed.
3. You Need Reliable Internet
This is the number one rule for digital nomads. Never trust a listing that just says "Wi-Fi included." You need to know the speed.
I once stayed in a place where the internet was so slow I couldn't even load my email. I had to run to a cafe every time I had a Zoom call. It was a nightmare.
When you are looking at a Puerto Vallarta rentals condo, ask the host for a speed test. Most good hosts are happy to show you.
4. Check the Kitchen Setup
When you are living somewhere for a few weeks, you can't eat out every single meal. Well, you could, but your stomach and your wallet might regret it.
I look for a kitchen that has a full-sized fridge and a good stove. It’s so nice to go to the local market, buy fresh fruit and fish, and cook a simple dinner at home.
Having a coffee maker is also a must for those early morning work sessions. There is nothing like the smell of Mexican coffee while you check your morning messages.
5. Balcony Life is Real
In Puerto Vallarta, the balcony is basically another room. It’s where I spend 80% of my time. I use it as my office in the morning and my lounge in the evening.
If a condo doesn't have a good outdoor space, I usually skip it. You want a place where you can see the sunset or at least feel the air.

This is why I prefer Amapas. You get the peace and quiet you need for deep work, but you are still seconds away from the fun.
8. Walking vs. Transportation
Everything in the main parts of town is walkable. I love not needing a car. You can walk to the grocery store, the pharmacy, and a dozen taco stands.
But remember, Puerto Vallarta has hills. Especially in Amapas! It keeps you fit, but you should be prepared for some stairs.
If you don't feel like walking, Ubers are very cheap and easy to find. I use them mostly when I’m carrying heavy groceries back to the condo.
9. Building a Community
One of the best things about the digital nomad life here is the community. There are so many people doing the exact same thing.
I’ve met friends just by hanging out in the common areas of my building or at local coffee shops. People are very friendly and always willing to share tips on the best places to eat.

10. Stay Flexible
Sometimes things don't go perfectly. The power might go out for an hour, or the street might be extra loud one day. That’s just part of the charm of Mexico.
Don't let the little things stress you out. If the Wi-Fi acts up, go grab a beer at the beach. If it’s too hot, take a siesta.
The best way to enjoy your time is to just go with the flow. You are in one of the most beautiful places in the world, after all!
