I've been eating my way through Puerto Vallarta for years now.
And if there's one thing this town does exceptionally well, it's seafood.
Fresh catches coming in daily. Ceviche that'll change your life. Shrimp dishes that make you wonder why you ever ate seafood anywhere else.
If you're planning a trip and staying in a condo near Old Town or Amapas, you're in the absolute BEST location to explore the seafood scene. Trust me on this one.
Let me walk you through my favorite spots, the places I actually go back to again and again.
Why Puerto Vallarta Is a Seafood Lover's Paradise
The Bay of Banderas isn't just beautiful to look at.
It's one of the most biodiverse marine areas in Mexico.
Local fishermen bring in fresh catches every single morning. We're talking red snapper, mahi-mahi, octopus, shrimp, and whatever else the ocean decided to offer that day.
When you eat seafood here, it didn't travel thousands of miles in a freezer truck.
It was probably swimming a few hours ago.
That freshness? You can taste it in every single bite.

The Blue Shrimp: A Romantic Zone Classic
My go-to spot when friends visit is The Blue Shrimp on Olas Altas.
This place has been around forever, and there's a reason it has over 5,500 reviews. The ceviches are outstanding. The Baja tacos hit different. And their signature Blue Shrimp dish? Absolutely worth the trip.
It's just a few minutes from the Malecón, so you can take a nice stroll after stuffing yourself.
They do breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus they have a beach club situation if you want to make a whole day of it.
I usually go for lunch. Grab a seat with a view. Order way too much food. No regrets.
Joe Jack's Fish Shack: Old Town Comfort Food
Joe Jack's has been serving up comfort food in Old Town since 2005.
Over 1,000 five-star reviews on Google don't lie.
Chef-owner Joe Jack knows what he's doing. The menu combines fresh local seafood with those familiar dishes you crave when you're away from home. Fish and chips, seafood tacos, fresh catches prepared simply and perfectly.
The prices are reasonable too, which I always appreciate.
This is the kind of place where you become a regular after just one visit. The staff remembers you. The vibe is welcoming. The food is consistently excellent.
If you're looking for Old Town Puerto Vallarta condo rentals, being close to Joe Jack's is honestly a major perk.

La Palapa: Beachfront Dining Done Right
La Palapa is an institution.
Right on Los Muertos Beach. Toes-in-the-sand kind of dining.
Their eggs Benedict with crab for breakfast is AMAZING. Like, I've dreamed about it back home amazing.
For dinner, go for the grilled octopus or the signature La Palapa shrimp. Both are incredible choices.
There's something about eating fresh seafood while watching the waves roll in. The sunset views don't hurt either.
This is the spot for a special occasion dinner or a lazy Sunday brunch.
Mariscos El Guero: The Local Secret
Want to eat where the locals eat?
Mariscos El Guero in the Romantic Zone is your answer.
Fresh ceviche. Fish tacos, fried or grilled, your call. Whole fish plates. Grilled shrimp tacos. Octopus quesadillas that I still think about randomly.
This place isn't fancy. It doesn't need to be.
The focus is entirely on quality ingredients prepared well. Simple formula, incredible results.
I love bringing friends here who think they need a white tablecloth to get good food. Their faces when they take that first bite of ceviche? Priceless every single time.

Tuna Azul: For the Serious Seafood Connoisseur
If you want something a bit more elevated, Tuna Azul is calling your name.
The Versalles location has a perfect 5.0 rating. Perfect. That's almost impossible to achieve.
The regular Tuna Azul holds a 4.9, which is equally impressive.
This is where you go when you want your seafood experience to feel special. The presentation is beautiful. The flavors are complex. Everything feels intentional.
Still casual enough for Puerto Vallarta vibes, but definitely a step up from your typical taco stand.
Oyster Grill de La Docena: Malecón Magic
Located right on the Malecón, this spot is all about oysters.
Grilled oysters in butter. Crab tostadas. Premium shrimp preparations.
If you're an oyster person, you absolutely need to check this place out.
The location is perfect for a pre-dinner stroll along the waterfront followed by an excellent meal watching the sun go down.
I always recommend this one to couples. Something about oysters and ocean views just works.
Why Staying in Amapas Makes Everything Better
Here's the thing about exploring Puerto Vallarta's seafood scene.
Location matters.
When you stay in Amapas or Old Town, you're within walking distance of almost every restaurant I just mentioned. No taxis needed. No navigation stress. Just walk out your door and start eating.
Amapas is my favorite area for vacation rentals. It's elevated above Old Town, so you get those incredible bay views. But you're still just minutes from all the action.
Our unit The Nest is perfectly positioned for exploring. Wake up, grab breakfast at La Palapa. Wander the Malecón. Hit up Joe Jack's for lunch. Nap. Then dinner at Tuna Azul.
That's a perfect Puerto Vallarta day right there.

My Personal Recommendations
If you only have time for one seafood meal: La Palapa for the full experience.
If you want the best ceviche: Mariscos El Guero, hands down.
If you're celebrating something special: Tuna Azul.
If you want casual comfort food: Joe Jack's Fish Shack.
If you love oysters: Oyster Grill de La Docena.
You really can't go wrong with any of these spots.
A Few Tips From Someone Who's Been There
Skip the tourist traps on the main Malecón strip. The best spots are usually one or two blocks back.
Lunch is often the same quality as dinner but with smaller crowds.
Ask your server what's fresh that day. Go with their recommendation.
Ceviche for breakfast is totally acceptable here. Don't fight it.
And always, always leave room for dessert.
Final Thoughts
Puerto Vallarta's seafood scene is one of the best I've experienced anywhere.
The combination of fresh daily catches, talented local chefs, and that laid-back beach town vibe creates something really special.
Whether you're into fancy plating or plastic chairs on the beach, there's a spot for you.
Book that condo in Amapas or Old Town. Make a list of restaurants to try. Then prepare to eat some of the best seafood of your life.
Highly recommended. Like, sooo highly recommended.
Happy eating, friends.
