I've helped so many travelers plan their Puerto Vallarta getaways over the years. And honestly? Three nights is the sweet spot for a first visit.
Not too rushed. Not too long. Just enough time to soak in the magic of this beautiful beach town.
Let me walk you through exactly how to make the most of your 3-night condo stay. This is the same itinerary I recommend to friends and family when they visit.
Trust me: it works every single time.
Why Stay in a Condo Instead of a Hotel?
Before we dive into the itinerary, let me explain why a condo stay changes everything.
You get a full kitchen to make breakfast or late-night snacks. You have more space to spread out. And you actually feel like you're living in Puerto Vallarta: not just visiting.
Plus, when you book Puerto Vallarta vacation rentals in the right neighborhood, you're steps away from everything. No shuttles. No expensive Ubers. Just walk out your door and start exploring.
It's a completely different vibe than hotel life.

Where to Stay: Location Matters
This is HUGE.
Not all neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarta are created equal. For a 3-night stay, you want to be somewhere walkable with easy access to beaches, restaurants, and nightlife.
My top recommendation? Amapas.
Amapas sits on the hillside just south of Old Town. The views are incredible. The streets are quieter. And you're still just a short walk to the action in the Zona Romántica.
Old Town itself is also fantastic. You're right in the heart of everything: restaurants, shops, the famous Malecón boardwalk, and Playa Los Muertos beach.
Both areas put you exactly where you want to be.
When I stay in Puerto Vallarta, I always choose Amapas. Units like The Nest offer the perfect home base with stunning bay views and that peaceful hillside feel. But you're still close enough to walk everywhere.
Best of both worlds.
Day 1: Arrive, Settle In, and Explore the Malecón
Morning/Afternoon
Your first day is all about arriving and getting comfortable.
Check into your condo. Unpack your bags. Take a deep breath.
If you arrive early enough, head to the beach for a quick swim or just relax by the pool. Let the vacation feeling sink in.
I always recommend stopping at a local market on the way to your condo. Grab some fresh fruit, eggs, coffee, and snacks. Having breakfast items ready for the next morning saves you time and money.
Evening
Once the sun starts getting lower, head to the Malecón.
This 1.6-mile boardwalk runs along the waterfront and it's absolutely beautiful at sunset. You'll see sculptures, colorful murals, and artwork created by Indigenous Huichol people.
Walk slowly. Take photos. Stop for a drink at one of the beachfront bars.
For dinner, skip the touristy spots right on the Malecón. Instead, duck into a local taqueria on the side streets. The food is better and way more authentic.
End your first night with tacos and a cold beer while watching the sun disappear over Banderas Bay.
Perfect start.

Day 2: Food Tour, Beach Time, and a Special Dinner
Morning
Make breakfast at your condo. This is one of the best parts about having a kitchen: no rushing to find a restaurant, no waiting for a table.
Coffee on the terrace with that ocean view? Yes please.
Then book a late-morning food tour of Old Town. This is one of my FAVORITE things to do in Puerto Vallarta.
A local guide takes you through the neighborhood's hidden culinary gems. You'll try things you'd never find on your own. Street tacos. Fresh ceviche. Traditional Mexican sweets.
And you learn so much about the history and culture along the way.
If you're looking for Old Town Puerto Vallarta condo rentals, being close to these food tour starting points is a huge bonus.
Afternoon
After all that eating, you'll want to relax.
Head back to your condo or find a spot on the beach. Playa Los Muertos is the most popular beach in Old Town: great people watching and plenty of beach chair rentals.
If you want something quieter, the smaller beaches near Amapas are less crowded.
Stop by Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale on your way home. It's a local market with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and authentic souvenirs. Way better than the tourist shops.
Evening
Tonight, treat yourself.
If you're visiting between mid-November and March, consider booking the Alma by Rhythms of the Night experience. A boat takes you to a hidden jungle location for dinner and a cultural performance under the stars.
It's unlike anything else.
Or keep it simple: find a nice restaurant in Old Town and enjoy a long, leisurely dinner. This is Mexico. No one rushes you.

Day 3: Adventure and Exploration
Early Morning
Wake up early for some adventure.
If you're visiting during whale season (mid-November through March), a whale-watching tour is an absolute must. Most tours last about 3 hours and include drinks and snacks while you cruise around Banderas Bay.
Seeing humpback whales breach out of the water? Unforgettable.
Not whale season? No problem. Take a water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach or Yelapa. These secluded beaches are only accessible by boat and feel like a different world.
Afternoon
Spend your last afternoon exploring Old Town at your own pace.
Here's my short list of must-sees:
- Parroquia de Guadalupe : the iconic church with the crown on top. Stunning Neo-Gothic architecture.
- Faro de Matamoros Mirador : climb up for panoramic views of the entire bay.
- La Isla : a jungle-like walking path between rivers with artisan shops and local vendors.
- Playa Los Muertos Pier : the sail-shaped metal sculpture offers incredible photo opportunities.
Take your time. Get lost in the cobblestone streets. Pop into shops. Stop for coffee.
This is the magic of Puerto Vallarta.
Evening
For your last night, keep it low-key.
Grab some street tacos or pick up ingredients at the market. Cook dinner at your condo and enjoy it on your terrace.
Watch the lights come on across the bay. Soak in the moment.
You'll be back. Everyone always comes back.

Quick Tips for Your 3-Night Condo Stay
Here's what I tell everyone before they go:
Stock your kitchen first thing. Breakfast items and snacks from local markets save you so much time and money.
Book tours in advance. Especially whale-watching and food tours during peak season. They sell out fast.
Walk everywhere in Old Town. The neighborhood is super walkable and you'll discover so much more on foot.
Use taxis or rideshare at night. If you're having drinks, don't worry about walking home in the dark. Taxis are affordable and safe.
Skip the tourist shops. The mercados (local markets) have better prices and more authentic souvenirs.
Stay in Amapas or Old Town. These neighborhoods put you right where you want to be. No transportation hassles.
Ready to Plan Your Trip?
Three nights in Puerto Vallarta is the perfect introduction to this amazing town.
You'll leave relaxed, well-fed, and already planning your next visit.
I highly recommend booking a condo in Amapas for the best combination of stunning views and walkability. It's become my favorite spot in the entire city.
