I've been eating tacos in Puerto Vallarta for years now.
And I mean REALLY eating them.
Street stands. Sit-down spots. Hole-in-the-wall joints that only locals know about.
If there's a taco being served somewhere in this town, I've probably tried it.
So today I'm sharing my absolute favorite taco spots. These are the places I send my friends and family when they visit.
No tourist traps. No overpriced spots with mediocre food.
Just really, really good tacos.
Why Puerto Vallarta Tacos Hit Different
Before we dive in, let me explain something.
Tacos here are not like the tacos you get back home.
They're smaller. The tortillas are fresh, often made right in front of you. The meat is seasoned differently. And the salsas? Game changers.
You'll usually eat three or four tacos in one sitting. Maybe more.
Don't be shy about it. That's how it's done here.

The Sit-Down Spots Worth Your Time
Sometimes you want to sit down, have a cold drink, and enjoy your tacos without standing on a sidewalk.
I get it.
Here are my top picks for a proper taco experience.
Pancho's Takos
This place is legendary.
Located at Basilio Badillo 162 in Old Town, Pancho's Takos has been serving up incredible tacos for years. The locals love it. The tourists love it. Everyone loves it.
Fair warning though, you might wait up to an hour during peak times.
Is it worth the wait? Absolutely.
The flavors are bold. The portions are generous. And the vibe inside is pure Puerto Vallarta energy.
My recommendation? Go early or go late. Skip the dinner rush if you can.
Pepe's Tacos
Ask any local where to get the best tacos in town.
Chances are they'll mention Pepe's Tacos.
You'll find this spot at Calle Honduras 201 in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. It's a bit outside the main tourist zone, which means fewer crowds and more authentic flavor.
The consistency here is what gets me. Every single time I go, the tacos are perfect.
If you're staying in a puerto vallarta condo rental nearby, this should be your first taco stop.
Tacos Sonorita Olas Altas
Here's a little insider tip.
If Pancho's line is too long, walk over to Tacos Sonorita Olas Altas instead.
Located at Pino Suárez 234 in Old Town, this spot specializes in tacos al pastor and rib tacos.
The al pastor is carved right off the spit. Pineapple on top. Perfect char on the meat.
If you arrive around 5 or 6 PM, you'll usually skip the wait entirely.
Highly recommended.

Street Stands That Locals Actually Go To
Okay, now we're getting into the good stuff.
Street tacos are where Puerto Vallarta really shines.
These stands pop up in the afternoon and stay open late into the night. The prices are low. The quality is HIGH.
Here's where I go when I want the real deal.
Carnitas Taco Stand
Corner of Cardenas and Aguacate.
That's all you need to know.
This stand serves slow-cooked pork tacos that will change your life. The carnitas are tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned.
They also make incredible horchata, that sweet, cinnamon-y rice drink that pairs perfectly with tacos.
The stand opens in the afternoon, so don't show up at noon expecting to eat. Plan accordingly.
Taqueria el Moreno
If you've never tried birria tacos, this is where you start.
Taqueria el Moreno is located at Calle Madero y Constitucion. They open early and stay open all afternoon.
Birria is a spicy stewed meat, usually goat or beef, that's been slow-cooked until it falls apart. You can get it in taco form or in a bowl with broth.
I always go for the tacos.
The meat is rich and flavorful. The tortillas soak up just enough of the juices. And the salsa they serve on the side? Perfection.
Taqueria Hormiga and Taqueria Mendoza
These two stands are both located outside Farmacia Guadalajara.
They compete with each other. And honestly? They're both amazing.
Both specialize in tacos al pastor. Both open mid-afternoon. Both stay open late.
I've gone back and forth between them countless times. Can't pick a winner.
Just go to whichever one has the shorter line.

Specialty Tacos You Need to Try
Sometimes you want something a little different.
Maybe you're craving seafood. Maybe you want barbacoa for breakfast. Maybe you want to treat yourself to something fancy.
Here are my specialty picks.
El Taquito Hidalguense
This is a breakfast spot.
Located downtown in el centro, El Taquito Hidalguense serves barbacoa tacos and quesadillas that locals consider mandatory.
Barbacoa is slow-cooked beef, tender, flavorful, and perfect for starting your day.
Get there early. Grab a table. Order a few tacos and a coffee.
This is how Puerto Vallarta locals start their mornings.
Tacos on the Street
Now this spot is a bit different.
Tacos on the Street has locations in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and Nuevo Vallarta. They specialize in charcoal-grilled rib-eye tacos.
Yes, rib-eye.
The tortillas are handmade. The meat is high-quality. The whole experience feels elevated.
Prices are higher than your average street stand, but the quality matches.
Worth it for a special occasion.
El Camarón Express
Craving seafood tacos?
El Camarón Express is your spot.
The original location is in Zona Hotelera, with another in Fluvial. They serve fresh fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and everything in between.
Light, fresh, and perfect for a hot day.
I usually grab a couple fish tacos and eat them while walking around. Simple pleasures.

Where to Stay for Easy Taco Access
Here's the thing about Puerto Vallarta tacos.
Most of the best spots are concentrated in Old Town and the surrounding areas.
If you're looking at puerto vallarta condo rentals, I'd highly recommend staying in Amapas.
Amapas is just south of Old Town. You're within walking distance of most taco spots I mentioned. But you also get a quieter, more residential vibe.
Best of both worlds.
The views from Amapas are incredible too. Rolling hills. Ocean vistas. Sunsets that make you never want to leave.
Plus, having your own kitchen means you can stock up on salsas from the local markets and recreate that taco magic at home.
My Final Recommendations
Okay, if you only have time for a few taco spots, here's what I'd do:
For sit-down: Pancho's Takos or Pepe's Tacos. You can't go wrong with either.
For street tacos: The Carnitas Stand at Cardenas and Aguacate. Life-changing pork.
For breakfast: El Taquito Hidalguense. The barbacoa is AMAZING.
For seafood: El Camarón Express. Fresh and delicious.
Honestly, you could spend a week just eating tacos here and never get bored.
Each spot has its own personality. Its own flavors. Its own loyal following.
My advice? Try as many as you can.
Your stomach will thank you.
And hey, if you need recommendations for anything else in Puerto Vallarta, just ask. I've got you covered.
Happy eating!
